The real value was in the ability to usurp it's Auto Navigation capabilities and use it for installing XCSoar onto as a flight computer. 3.5 hours is completely overstated. I bought this when it was available for under $100 in order to test out what could be done with it as a Windows CE device. It has been stable and the times I have used it for vehicle navigation it worked well. It should save that and pick up time information based on the GPS. Not something your typical user is going to do, but V7 didn't do anything to prevent that. Battery life is horrible.
Since it is really intended to be in a car and they include a cigarette adapter, the battery life issue is relatively minor. It's Nav capabilities seem reasonable compared to my Garmin Nuvi. I typically get around an hour. Nice plus in my book.Touch screen works very well and the screen is readable in most lighting conditions. Includes everything you need and the maps can be downloaded if you muck up the SD card that it comes with. For under $100 it is a real value. For Sailplane pilots, the combo of this device and XCSoar is fantastic and gives you the functionality of a multi-thousand dollar navigation system for pretty cheap.Minor nuisances are the fact that you have to set the clock every time you completely power it off. Being Windows, it does seem to have a couple of minor stability issues.Overall it is a good value and can keep up with the Tom Tom and Garmins of the world.
I have had no trouble with the battery. I'd have to grab the unit and hold it close to my ear in order to hear. Ok, back to the point or points. I mean, not instantly, but within a few minutes and your good to go.
Maybe whoever had the unit before just didn't need that type of unit or needed other functions). I've used the unit for almost or maybe longer than an hour after a complete charge and it's still going strong. Perhaps only a mess up on my own part.Ok, I'm taking a breath.Let's see, battery good; check, switching from screen to screen; check,. Ok, I'm done.
Well, I honestly don't know what else to add. ( It looked new when I bought it, but after browsing History and what not I could see that the unit had been used; never the less. Eiter this or just ' go with a gut feeling '. They can all be a pain sometimes. I was really weary of this unit at first, but quite honestly I don't see any problems with it.
And when i click ' Yes ' it won't do anything. And was actually happy the GPS found me this morning and told me what road I was on. I stopped into a pawn shop with my mother with no intension of buying a GPS unit, but I do love to browse and had been ' off and on ' checking out GPS units. I was a bit skiddish like I said, after reading some of the reviews. I was going to check it out for the fun of it and am tickled how well it worked. I've read all or most of the reviews here about the NAV 740 and well, was hoping I would fall into any of the ' problem categories '.
I finally had the chance to actually drive with this unit this morning. as for the lack of ' Maps ' in the V7 units. At least I have ran into any problems there. Anyway, I seen the GPS unit and walked out of the Pawn Shop with it. very well if you ask me.ok, let's see. Ok, i have not had any problems with browsing from one screen to another; even though sometimes or on some options it ask ' do you want to _____.
This unit rocks. Even with having to grab the unit up I could make out what she was telling me. David I believe. Which is a good thing perhaps. Yes, with any bit of ' new ' technology or ' change ' from anything you are use to.
My grammer stinks somtimes. Anyway, it's very audible, clear, easy to hear and to understand. Quite honestly I had never read any reviews, I had never checked into whether any of them were any good or not. Ha ha. Wasn't use to the area and blinked, plus had someone behind me which added to the pressure. I've looked a few things up. Which from my experience with GPS units this thing is doing a very nice job of it.
I don't know. The unit found me, kept up with me ( the Arrow >>> went with me in complete accuracy ). The Satelite hooks up pretty quick. I just read one review, what was the name.
the 740 seems to be very extensive in map knowledge. You simply have to try and keep up with it all. BUT, IT WORKS. And not to mention it does a really good job of ' finding you ' or ' where YOU are.
Ah, had the window cracked to. WElllll, I missed my turn. With technology now days you never can tell. 5 stars. Over all though. Turn left on so and so Hwy,.8 miles ahead > then it would narrow it down to ' turn left at the next street '.
No problems there. In fact it told me something like 3 times before I came to the next turn that I needed to turn > and this is how it works. Great review with great detail and very well written. I'm a ' bad, bad smoker 'eh '. Within just a few feet every time for me. But, there was no need for my breaking or ' turning around '.
God Bless Oh yeh, well, my car sits low to the ground anyway, which adds to ' noise ' and not to mention I just had the unit sitting in my lap so, I could here what the lady was telling me. Hope this was all helpful.
After using for 2 days as bought, I found IGO8 on the internet with choice of TeleAtlas or Navteq 2008 maps. I like Navteq. Everything is on 2GB sd card so simply putting original sd card in and it's back to as shipped state. Faster response with more feature's than my wife's Garmin.
I have put this bigger screen GPS in use for about two months and am very satisfied. I found it works fine, and it is very easy to operate. Considering that I paid less than $100 and no freight for it from Amazon.com, I thought I have had a bargain. I would rate it as "best buy".
Pros: I was excited when I recieved this item and you can read for youreslf all the features. Cons: THE BATTERY LIFE IS APRX 20 - 35 MIN AT THE MOST CONSERVATIVE SETTINGS. THIS DEFEATS ALL THE FEATURES BECAUSE THEY ARE OF NO USE ON BATTERY POWER.BUYER BE AWARE.
